Definition: Consumer

By Jack Krupansky

A consumer is the end user or customer of a product or service which has been acquired from a vendor (producer or distributor).

An organizational entity, such as a business or association, would tend to be referred to as a customer and not a consumer. The end users on whose behalf the product or service was acquired would be referred to as the consumers.

An individual acquiring a product or service for use by themselves or their family or friends would be a customer as well as a consumer.

Similarly, a computational entity acquiring a product or service for use my itself would be referred to as both a customer and a consumer, and a computational entity acquiring a product or service for use within a larger aggregation or computational entities would be referred to as a customer, and the computational entities which ultimately use the product or service would be referred to as the consumers.

Synonym for end user.

Singular of consumers.
