An open multi-agent system is a multi-agent system which allows arbitrary external software agents to join the system, as contrasted to a closed multi-agent system for which the set of agent types is predefined by the entity that sets up and controls the system.
Agents can come from anywhere, may be buggy or even malicious, and must run in a dynamic and potentially failure-prone environment.
