Definition: Overlay Network

An overlay network is a virtual network which is subset of the nodes of one or more networks that have agreed to be mutually accessible in pursuit of some common purpose.

A file sharing network is one example of an overlay network.

A distributed multi-agent system would typically be implemented on an overlay network.

Synonym for cloud.

Singular of overlay networks.
